“India lives in several centuries at the same time.” – Arundhati Roy

Literature from this wonferfully paradoxical young country, with a median population age of 29 years and 77 years in its post-colonial, present form, stretches back c.3,500 years. Many of those early works, with a captivating promise of personal and collective liberty, have endured the modern times. The Vedas, Upanishads and the mythological texts of Ramayana and Mahabharatha continue to shape the very soul of the nation even today, as a creed, underpinning several aspects of life: psychological, spiritual, socio-political, and of course, literature.
With more than a hundred regional languages, 22 of which are official, Indian Literature is as vast as it is diverse. In this book selection, we will try to dip our toes in the sea of Indian Literature as we look at some novels from the post-colonial era that delve, with equal measures of joyful frivolity and earnest seriousness, into the heart of what it means to be human.

Format:
Part 1: presenter(s) provide a short overview of the pre-selected books, highlighting some of the reviews and critics and other relevant background. Members who have read any of the books can contribute.
Part 2: participants are invited to introduce any book that they would like to recommend and provide a short overview thereof (on a voluntarily basis).
Part 3: participants vote to select the book to be discussed in one of the upcoming book discussion meetings.
