Originally published in 1918, Rivalry is regarded as the masterpiece of Nagai Kafū, a Japanese novelist known for his brilliant renderings of Tokyo in the early years of modern Japan.
The book begins with a chance encounter at a theatre, as Yoshioka, a successful businessman, notices a face from the past. His conversation with the beautiful Komayo is our ticket into the hidden world of the geisha.
Winner our of Japanese Aestheticism book selection, this is a compact novel, celebrated as one of the most convincing and sensually rich portraits of the Japanese courtesan profession.
