The International House of Associations Rue des Savoises 15, salle Albert Jacquard · Genève, GE, Geneva
The Statue of Liberty's pedestal famously bears the words of Jewish American poet Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Though this promise hasn't always held up, the United States remains a nation of immigrants with diverse backgrounds, cultures, races, and languages. Immigrants to the United States, along with their descendants, have significantly contributed and continue to enrich various fascets of American society, including its literature. Following a brief overview of definitions and historical and societal issues, we will delve into literary works by authors from diverse immigrant backgrounds.
