Our book for February is ‘Postcards From The Edge’, by the recently and sadly departed, Carrie Fisher.

Carrie Fisher was much more than ‘just’ Princess Leia. In addition to more than 40 movie appearances since Star Wars and an equal number of TV roles, she was also (amongst many other things) an accomplished novelist, writer of non-fiction, Hollywood’s foremost ‘script doctor’, champion of people with bipolar disorder and (I promise I’m not making this up) James Blunt’s therapist. She was sharp and witty to the very end, and her loss (the cause of which she asked to be reported as ‘drowned in moonlight and strangled by my own bra’) is tragic.

Postcards From The Edge is a semi-autobiographical novel which describes and satirizes real-life events from Fisher’s own early Hollywood career, including her drug addiction, time in rehab and her relationship with her very famous and difficult mother. It was a best-seller and became widely known as a rare source of truth regarding day to day life and business in Hollywood.

From The New York Times (2016):
‘while others before Fisher had written about their struggles with addiction, Postcards from the Edge "bristles with a bravery and candor that still feels groundbreaking. She went there, long before that was a catchphrase, and before that particular there was such a crowded piece of real estate.’

Themes include: drug abuse, addiction, Hollywood, sex

If you’ve read it, come along and discuss it in an atmosphere of curiosity and good humour.

If you haven’t read it: no problem! Come along anyway. Our meetings always include a detailed overview of the book, its author and its main themes so there’s plenty to talk about.

Geneva International Book Group meetings are culturally diverse, open-minded and friendly. Everyone is welcome and attendance is free of charge. (But please buy a drink from the bar.)

How to get there.
MLC Librairie Café, Rue de Carouge 98. 1205 Geneva.

From the Augustins tram stop, stroll casually with mounting anticipation for 3 to 5 minutes towards Carouge. The café is at an angle on the right, almost opposite the IFAGE building.
