Beer + Books: White Teeth, Zadie Smith
Thursday, January 12th, 2017 @ 19:30
Harper's Pub, Rue de la Barre 8, Lausanne
TIME: 19:30/7:30 PM
PLACE: The restaurant formerly known as Harper's Pub at Rue de la Barre 8, up by Riponne
BOOK: White Teeth, by Zadie Smith
Every month, the Lausanne Book Club gets together to grab a drink (beer optional), unwind from work, and talk about a book we picked and read the month previous. We like engaging but relaxed discussions, so feel free to come even if your busy schedule has kept you from finishing the book--or if you haven't read it, but just want to eavesdrop on some interesting book talk!
Our January book THE GIRL WHO SAVED THE KING OF SWEDEN was suggested by Mai. Here's a quick pitch:
"On New Year's morning, 1975, Archie Jones sits in his car on a London road and waits for the exhaust fumes to fill his Cavalier Musketeer station wagon ... When the owner of a nearby halal butcher shop (annoyed that Archie's car is blocking his delivery area) comes out and bangs on the window, he gives Archie another chance at life and sets in motion this richly imagined, uproariously funny novel [which] plays out its bounding, vibrant course in a Jamaican hair salon in North London, an Indian restaurant in Leicester Square, an Irish poolroom turned immigrant café, a liberal public school, a sleek science institute."
"A winning debut in every respect, White Teeth marks the arrival of a wondrously talented writer who takes on the big themes —faith, race, gender, history, and culture— and triumphs."
Intrigued? Hope to see you there! Please RSVP and come with 1-2 suggestions for a book (any genre, 500 pages or less, preferably available as an ebook) to read at future meetings. The more people who make suggestions, the more varied and interesting our book selections!
Can't make it? Sign up for our group to get invites to all future meetings. You can also see the books we've read before in our group info.
