From my local newspaper (East Africa) And I do NOT in any way find it amusing Quote How could I allow myself to die when God had provided me A way out ? Hunger respects no earthly heroes. Had I not stolen the ripe banana, I would have succumbed To starvation. Banana theft suspect in mitigation in a Nyeri court.

Touching. Did he get punished, or was he excused? It's a tough question for the judge: on the one hand, it's clear the guy broke the law and stole. On the other hand, he was starving to death! So what did the judge do?

I do not know the answer Nir but in the same court a man Was fined 20 euros for stealing a pumpkin, in mitigation he Asked the court to be lenient, saying that he was severely Beaten up by a mob when caught stealing the pumpkin. Quote I was given a thorough beating, I was whipped, stoned and I Almost died. Unquote The magistrate said he deserved to be punished as an example To others. Another man received a one year jail term for stealing a Sheep that he slaughtered for his wife who had complained That they never ate meat. By the way it will be impossible for the man to pay the fine of 20 euros he will therefore have to serve a prison sentence
