Living in Khartoum, the Sudan
As part of an upcoming transfer to Khartoum, I'd love to hear from anyone who has worked, lived, visited there for getting info re. tips about living there --good places to learn Arabic, good things, bad things, recommendations on how to best start building a community of friends, networks...plus the usual "I love XXXX and wish I had known YYYY". I'll follow up in more detail with anyone who shares their insights in this forum. Many thanks!

Hi cmchang - I've been in Khartoum in 2005 so things have must change a bit since then... but I can tell you that I liked very much the place. There are plenty of arabic courses and good teachers to learn arabic so you can easily start courses. Depending on your taste, you can have nice activities there. There was a swimming pool in a hotel where usually expatriates were going. There are also restaurants and expatriates events (the usual parties on saturday night, depends what you are looking for...).

At that time it was possible to go in the sundays markets but sometimes due to security, the advises were to stay at home.

More than the activities, the ambiance of Khartoum is very special - a mix of african, arabic and oriental cultures. Sudanese people are very nice and very welcoming, just be careful with the way you dress when you go out.

Hey there,

Well, Khartoum changed a bit since 2005... but generally its a secure city to live. You should know that its extremely hot in summers (well, 8 months!) and very expensive. Get ready to pay your coffee 6 US dollar and the entrence of the swimming pool 20 to 30 US dollars each time!! ;o) I loved Khartoum (lived there 13 months and have been there for other meetings) but many people have difficulties to handle... no place to go out dancing, drinlking, etc but if you have your own friends, you can make it yourself. Good luck and enjoy the sun... :D
