Hi,
I'll be moving to Geneva in 15days and am totally freaked out - figure I should start, I dunno, looking for apartments or something...Currently in Singapore, originally from Southern Africa (half Zimbabwean, half Mozambiquan, Resident in South Africa). Will be starting my PhD at the IHIED. Lifelines in any shape, manner or form are most welcome :)

Hey; don't freak out, geneva is cool, lots of friendly people to meet and cool places to hang out. Fiding an apartment is however a bit trickier than in other places. I'd start right here - post an ad on glocals and then check out the websites provided by the IHIED.
Hope to see you when you get here.

Hey Mak!
Welcome (soon) to Geneva. As Bianca said - you're coming to a cool place. And as Casuistik said: finding accomodation here is not easy, and may take some time.
Start by checking out the Geneva apartments for rent section on glocals.com, and post your own 'needed' ad there. And if you don't find ANYTHING and you need to arrive here already, let me know and I'll do my best to find you a place at least for the 1st few days.
Later,
Nir

wow, not really into social networking sites bt this was definately a good idea (friendly people, fun activities:) You guys rock. I generally suk at practical stuff like moving - thought maybe I could do a week in a cheap hotel while apartment hunting - but should probably look on the classifieds (more aggressively) as you all suggested. Looking forward to meeting you & thanks for being so nice - will bring you something touristy. By the way, how cold is it going to be in September? When does it start becoming sub-zero? So gonna die

Hey Mak,
Everyone sucks at moving! It's not a nice process. But yea, you really have to attack it, otherwise you might find yourself in that cheap motel for much longer than you expected...(-;
Still on moving, check out this post about sharing apartments in Geneva.Might be worth it for it for contact Liz and do the search together.
Sep is usually still pretty warm. You might catch a few rainy days (it rains here about 30% of the time even in summer), but no fear of The Sub-Zero. The real cold days won't really start before Nov-Dec.
See you when you're here!
