French....

Hi all,

I've been here 6 weeks now and have not really had to speak any French yet. Everybody I have spoken to seems to pick up on me being English and they immediately start speaking in english....nice but not very helpful in the long run.

I'd like to be able to meet up and explore switzerland while learning the language.

Any takers??

Jamie

Sounds like a good plan. Its quite infuriating when you try and speak French and everyone speaks back in English.

What do you reccomend? How about a trip into France where people are not so helpful or more rural Swiss when they (maybe) dont know English?

Who says the people in France are not so helpful?

I find this remark a sweeping generalisation and one which is, dare I say it, most unhelpful.

As might be seen, we live in Evian and have received nothing but help and courtesy in the four years we have lived here.

I had a different problem - when I arrived here in 2008, I could not find a single person outside of work who would speak English... but that is before I learned about the glocals community, of course

On a more practical note, try speaking French at the supermarket, dry cleaner's, library, train station... I found that in these places people are less likely to respond in English.

And of course, private lessons would help Laughing
