I am currently on a mission to find similar food in Switz as to what I am used to in the UK, as I am struggling to cope with the bland Swiss diet and uninspiring choice of stuff I find in my local Migros and surrounding area.
1) "Proper bacon". Considering Swiss bacon consists of strips of smoked fat with some carefully arranged shreds of meat added as an afterthought, I would love to find some that is more than a nanometer thick. If it means I need to go online and pay a bit more then fine, that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
2) Proper sausages. If I never see another bratwurst or Cervelat I will die a happy man. I long for the meaty coarse texture that only a "proper" sausage can give, one that isn't defiled with any spices and is just a plain good old pork link.
3) Jars of cooking sauce bigger than 5ml. I miss being able to go into a supermarket and find jars of sauces... whether it was a 600ml Rogan Josh or a large jar of Chicken Tonight, at least it was enough for a good meal. In Zurich all I can find are about 3 types of sauce and all so small that i'd probably need around 4 of them to make a dent. Oh, and they cost about 3x what their size would suggest. If I could find some normal sized jard with any form of variety I would be seriously chuffed.
To be honest that's all I can really think of for now, though i'm sure there's more waiting to be ranted about. If anyone has any tips to share about finding stuff like this either in the city or online then I would be very, very grateful. :hehe:

Try the Spezialitäten-Markt inside Main-Station on Wednesday.
http://www.railcity.ch/index/index_zuerich/zuerich_news_events/07_event_070306_-_spezialitaeten-markt.htm
Or go to an organics-shop (though you might have to order it via sites like http://www.picobio-shop.ch/shop/frame.asp?user=testuser).
A bit pricey, though.
I've also heard good things about http://www.metzgereikuenzli.ch.
I don't eat that much meat that it's worth for me going there, though.

I found a recipe for "Rogan Josh" pretty quickly.
Unlike sausages, it seems not so difficult to prepare it yourself.

Maybe try Barkat Cash & Carry in Birmensdorferstrasse (I think they also have a branch somewhere else)? They've got a large selection of this stuff. And no website....

Hi,

cheers

The Globus Deli will most likely have your sausages,- and for a cheaper version you
need to check out the German supermarket brands, like Aldi or Lidl. Their sausages are much
more like british sausages.
And the bacon challenge: be careful
what you select, I think Migros do do an English style bacon, the call it Frühstücksspeck,
possibly even a thick cut version.. They have many variants, but I am pretty certain they do a
thicker meatier bacon.
Also Globus Deli or a farmers market
(Saturdays near you some place) will have a heavy smoke, sliced to your liking
too..)
Cooking sauces: I would also try the Globus for that.
You can get some basic Sharwoods in the Indian store at Langstrasse I believe, - but dont
know about cooking sauces..

Am a bit surprised that no one has done this yet, so I'm going to gulp down the bait and stick up for Swiss food!
Exhibit A: Cheese - the diversity might not be as extensive as France of Italy, but if you like this style then it's totally unbelievably awesome - and I love this style!
Exhibit B: Cured meats - Speck, salami style cured sausages, if I were vegetarian I'd be sneaking into the kitchen at 3am to indulge in some serious hypocrisy on account of this
Exhibit C: Carbs - Rösti, spätzli - I like to get them crispy over a high heat and combine with a bit of exhibit A
There's more I like but these are the highlights for me. Generally I also love the fact that there are still a lot of local independent shops selling local produce.
It's obviously good to like the food of your home country but while you are in CH you might as well take advantage and try to appreciate the great produce they have here as well.

Well, fyi, Spätzli (or Spätzl-e as they are actually called) are a German import, a bit like Cuckoo
Clocks .. ahem.
Hey rich, why not start a new thread singing the praises
of Swiss food..- might get people's mouths watering for more..
I
myself took about 20 years to start missing any of it.-
Some
of my favorits are Bündnerfleisch, Biberli and Vermicelles.. mmm(and yes,
even when I was Vegetarian, I did succumb to eating the odd slice of that Bündnerfleisch,
oyoy)
Clocks .. ahem.
